SWAT or ERT teams are heavily armed, highly trained teams of police officers or federal agents who respond to life threatening incidents, such as hostage situations, barricaded individuals, drug raids, and serving of warrants. Personnel are usually armed with automatic rifles, sniper rifles, and handguns and wear ballistic vests and ballistic helmets. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) and New York City Police Department (NYPD) have full-time SWAT teams that operate 24/7.
